On the morning of the Tucson shooting, I interviewed Dan one last time. I sat in the kitchen of his idyllic B&B and reflected on my previous conversations with him. During each of my visits to Tucson, Dan had complained about the effects of the border wall on his neighborhood and on Tucson in general. He felt that the border wall does not promote safety; rather, the wall exacerbates divisive thinking and behavior. He stressed the need for border communities and for the nation as a whole to engage in what he described as “holistic thinking”:

Everybody wants good health, to be safe, and have adequate food. If we legalize drugs, wouldn’t that make everyone safer? It drives down the price, drives down illegal trading; drugs wouldn’t be such a big deal. We can’t keep one side of the border safe without trying to keep the other side safe. The border creates that “us against them” mentality. And it is constructed like that—to create war, to put people in prison—things like that. All this emphasis on lines and borders … borders recreate Republicans versus Democrats, Christians versus Muslims … it makes it hard to solve problems.
